IMD issues weather alerts for Odisha, warns of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from May 25 to 30

Bhubaneswar, May 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings for several districts in Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, and gusty surface winds between May 25 and May 30, 2025.
According to an official IMD press release, a cyclonic circulation currently persists over north coastal Odisha and adjoining areas at an altitude of 3.1 km above mean sea level. Additionally, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27, which could further intensify weather activity across the state.
An Orange Warning has been issued for May 25, with thunderstorms, lightning, and surface winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph expected in several regions. Heavy rainfall is also very likely at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Kandhamal.
A Yellow Warning for the same day covers districts including Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Puri, Khurda, and others, predicting thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph.
For May 26, similar Yellow Warnings have been issued, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity expected to continue in multiple districts. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions.
