IMD issues thunderstorm alerts for Odisha districts till May 24

Bhubaneswar, May 19: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts in Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, strong winds, and light to moderate rainfall till May 24. Residents have been advised to take precautions during afternoon and evening hours, as weather conditions are expected to be unstable across various regions.
May 20 Forecast: Orange and Yellow Alerts Across the State
On May 20, an orange warning has been issued for the districts of Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati. These regions are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in place for Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur, where winds are expected to reach speeds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph. In addition, hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
May 21 Forecast: Widespread Yellow Alerts for Thunderstorms
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for May 21 in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh. These areas are expected to witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph during the late hours of the day. Additionally, hot and humid weather conditions are predicted to persist in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati, all of which are under yellow warning for heat and humidity.
May 22 Forecast: Southern Odisha on Orange Alert
On May 22, the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Nabarangapur have been placed under an orange warning, with thunderstorms and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph expected in the afternoon and evening. A yellow warning has also been issued for Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Sundargarh, where similar weather is likely with slightly lower wind speeds of 30-40 kmph.
