IMD refutes cyclone rumours over Bay of Bengal, calls media speculation premature

Bhubaneswar, May 14: Amid widespread speculation in the media about a potential cyclone forming over the Bay of Bengal between May 23 and 28, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has firmly denied the claims, clarifying that no such alert has been issued so far.
According to IMD sources, there is currently no cyclonic circulation or weather system in the Bay of Bengal that indicates the onset of cyclogenesis — the development of a cyclone. The department confirmed that its advanced monitoring systems, including satellite imagery and forecasting models, have not detected any such development at this stage.
Weather scientist Umashankar Das also addressed the issue humorously on social media, stating, “Is there a cyclone on TV? Yes… not on sea… just on TV,” implying that the panic appears to be media-driven rather than based on scientific evidence.
The IMD reassured the public that it continues to monitor atmospheric and oceanic conditions round the clock and will issue timely warnings if any potential weather threat arises. For now, no cyclone-related alert or advisory has been issued for any region.
