Massive fire guts GIET University’s Computer Science dept; equipment worth lakhs destroyed

Bhubaneswar, May 10: A major fire broke out in the main building of the Computer Science Department at GIET University in Gunupur, located in Odisha’s Rayagada district, late Friday night. The blaze caused extensive damage, reducing high-end computers, lab equipment, and other vital infrastructure to ashes.
According to reports, thick smoke was seen billowing from the building, prompting immediate alarm. Upon receiving the alert, two fire tenders from the Gunupur Fire Station rushed to the university campus and battled the flames for nearly two hours before finally bringing the fire under control.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, as the building was unoccupied at the time of the incident. However, the financial loss is believed to be substantial, with computers, servers, and other technical resources completely destroyed. Preliminary investigations by the Fire Department suggest that an electrical short circuit might have triggered the blaze.
Authorities have begun a detailed inquiry to determine the exact cause and evaluate safety protocols across the campus. The incident has raised serious concerns about fire safety standards in educational institutions and has prompted calls for immediate infrastructure audits and preventive measures.
