MBBS admission racket busted ahead of NEET; four arrested with cheques worth ₹90 lakh

Bhubaneswar, May 3: In a major crackdown just a day before the NEET examination, the Commissionerate Police on Saturday busted an interstate racket involved in selling MBBS seats for lakhs of rupees. The gang was allegedly targeting aspiring medical students and their families, promising guaranteed admissions into reputed colleges in exchange for hefty bribes.
At a press briefing, Commissioner of Police S. Dev Datta Singh confirmed the arrest of four individuals—two from Odisha and one each from Bihar and Jharkhand—who were operating the scam. Police seized cheques worth ₹90 lakh from the accused, which they had collected from candidates as part of admission deals.
The racket had reportedly already struck several deals and even planned to send impersonators to appear for the NEET exam on behalf of genuine aspirants. "It is still under investigation whether these impersonation attempts were successful or not," said CP Singh. "But it is evident they were well-organised and ready to manipulate the system on a large scale."
The Special Crime Unit apprehended the accused during a targeted raid. Investigations are ongoing.
