Bhubaneswar, April 30: In a heart-wrenching incident, a seven-year-old girl named Jhili, daughter of Arjun Maiti, drowned in the Mantei River at Jagannath Prasad panchayat under Basudevpur block in Bhadrak district on Tuesday.

According to sources, Jhili had accompanied her mother to her maternal grandfather’s house in Mishrapur village. In the afternoon, while playing alone near the riverbank, she accidentally slipped and fell into the deep waters. When she did not return home for a long time, her family grew worried and launched a frantic search in the surrounding areas.

Suspecting that she may have fallen into the river, her family began searching along the riverbank but failed to trace her. They immediately alerted the local fire services department.

A rescue team rushed to the spot and, after a prolonged search operation, recovered Jhili’s body. She was taken to the Basudevpur Community Health Centre, where doctors declared her dead.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of gloom over the village, as locals gathered to mourn the untimely death of the young girl.
