IMD issues orange and yellow alerts for Odisha amid intense heatwave conditions

Bhubaneswar, April 22: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow warnings across several districts in Odisha, forecasting severe heatwave conditions, hot and humid weather, and warm nights through April 26.
As per IMD’s special bulletin, Jharsuguda is under orange alert today due to the likelihood of severe heatwave. Heatwave conditions are also expected in Boudh, Bolangir, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur, while Nuapada, Bargarh, Kalahandi, and Sonepur remain under yellow warning.
Coastal and interior districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati are likely to experience hot and humid conditions. Additionally, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Bolangir may face unusually warm nights.
On April 23 and 24, Jharsuguda continues under orange alert, while Angul, Nuapada, and Deogarh may also experience heatwave conditions. The coastal belt will persist with humid weather.
By April 25, the orange alert covers Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bolangir, Boudh, Bargarh, and Sonepur, indicating worsening heat stress in eastern Odisha.
On April 26, Bolangir and Bargarh will remain under orange warning, while Boudh, Sonepur, Kalahandi, and Sambalpur shift to yellow alert.
The IMD urges the public to avoid outdoor exposure during peak heat hours and take preventive measures to guard against heat-related illnesses.
