Odisha to witness sharp rise in temperature from April 20: IMD

Bhubaneswar, April 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant rise in temperatures across Odisha starting April 20. Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das, in a statement on Thursday, said that the current moderate temperatures—largely staying below 40°C—are due to the prevailing nor’wester (Kalbaisakhi) effect, which has brought scattered rain and thunderstorms across the state.
However, Das warned that this cooling influence is expected to weaken in the next three days, leading to a sharp rise in daytime temperatures. As a result, several parts of interior Odisha are likely to experience temperatures exceeding 40°C, with some areas potentially reaching severe heatwave levels.
The transition from cooler, stormy conditions to intense dry heat may increase health risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. The IMD has advised residents to take necessary precautions—such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and using protective clothing.
District authorities are also expected to issue local advisories and prepare for potential heatwave-related challenges.
