Three held in Bhubaneswar builder murder case; land dispute suspected as motive
Bhubaneswar, April 12: In a significant development in the murder case of Bhubaneswar-based builder Sasmit Kumar Biswal, the Airfield Police detained three individuals late Friday night in connection with the crime. The accused have been identified as Gulu Mohanty (34), Manoj Behera alias Silu (31), and Sukant Behera (41), all residents of Pradhan Sahi under Airfield Police Station jurisdiction.
The action followed a complaint lodged by Debabrata Mohanty, the younger brother of the deceased, on Friday at the Airfield Police Station. Based on the FIR, a case was registered under Sections 100(3)(1), 100(3)(2), and 16(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), bearing Airfield PS Case No. 100(5), dated April 11, 2025. The FIR named seven individuals, of whom three are now in custody.
Speaking to the press, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena revealed that Biswal, 47, a resident of Bhimpur, was engaged in a land plotting business with the accused. Preliminary investigations point to a dispute over a land deal as the trigger for the fatal confrontation. A post-mortem was conducted on Friday, and a forensic team has inspected the scene. A special investigation team is pursuing the remaining suspects, with more arrests expected soon.
