Bhubaneswar, April 12: In a dramatic turn of events, two individuals implicated in the harrowing rape of a minor girl within the Belpahar police jurisdiction of Jharsuguda district were shot by law enforcement officers. The incident occurred during their transfer to court, when Sheikh Asif and Abhishek Barik, the accused, allegedly made a bold attempt to break free from police custody.

According to official police statements, the situation escalated rapidly as the detainees tried to flee while being transported along the Belpahar-Jharsuguda Road. Despite repeated verbal warnings from the escorting officers, the accused reportedly persisted in their escape attempt, prompting the police to resort to the use of firearms.

The confrontation resulted in both Sheikh Asif and Abhishek Barik sustaining bullet injuries to their legs. Subsequently, they were immediately taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Jharsuguda for necessary medical treatment. The police have initiated an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged escape attempt and the subsequent use of force.
