Nor’wester brings relief and chaos to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack

Bhubaneswar, April 11: The nor’wester rain provided much-needed relief to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, breaking the intense heatwave that had pushed temperatures beyond 40°C. The late-night storm brought dark clouds, strong winds, and a welcome drop in temperature, offering residents respite from the oppressive heat.
Strong gusts and sudden cooling transformed the weather, bringing a refreshing breeze that eased the discomfort of recent scorching days. Citizens welcomed the overnight weather shift after enduring extreme heat for several days.
However, the relief was short-lived for many, as the storm also caused widespread damage. In Bhubaneswar, trees were uprooted and branches littered roads, creating hazards for commuters and blocking traffic in multiple areas.
The storm severely impacted the power supply, snapping lines and toppling poles. Large parts of the cities experienced prolonged electricity outages, forcing residents to spend the night in darkness as repair efforts got underway.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with rain and winds (40–50 km/h) in several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, and Sundargarh on Friday. On April 12, the storm activity is expected to extend to Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, and other southern regions.
