Odisha Assembly disrupted as opposition stages protest over rising crimes against women
Bhubaneswar, March 20: The Odisha Assembly witnessed a stormy session on Thursday, with repeated adjournments as opposition members from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress created a ruckus over multiple issues. The uproar disrupted the proceedings, leaving the House paralyzed for most of the session.
The day began on a solemn note with a minute of silence observed as a tribute to former BJD MLA Debaraj Seth, who recently passed away. However, chaos erupted soon after as the question hour commenced. Congress legislators stormed into the well of the House, hooting and whistling in protest against the alleged rise in crimes against women in the state.
The situation worsened when Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling began speaking, as Congress members took to the podium, shouting slogans. Speaker Surama Padhy repeatedly urged them to maintain order, but the protests intensified, with opposition members demanding a government response on women’s safety.
Congress MLAs, wearing black armbands, also strongly opposed the recent suspension of party leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati, further escalating tensions.
