BJD backs suspended Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, urges Speaker to revoke order

Bhubaneswar, March 12: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has extended its support to Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, who was suspended for seven days for alleged ‘misconduct’ in the Odisha Legislative Assembly. In a rare show of political unity, a delegation of BJD members met Speaker Surama Padhy, urging her to reconsider the suspension and revoke the order.
Both BJD and Congress workers staged protests against the decision, calling it one-sided and unfair. Bahinipati himself questioned the legality of his suspension, demanding clarity on the rules under which the action was taken. The suspension was imposed following repeated disruptions in the House, with the Congress MLA allegedly breaking the podium microphone on Monday, leading to chaos. Despite multiple warnings, he reportedly continued his disorderly conduct on Tuesday, prompting the Speaker to take strict action.
The incident has sparked intense political debate, with opposition parties criticizing the decision as excessive. Meanwhile, the Speaker has yet to respond to the demands for revoking the suspension, keeping the issue politically charged.
