Rourkela Police crack daylight robbery case, arrest key accused

Bhubaneswar, March 10: In a major breakthrough, Rourkela police have arrested an accused involved in a daring daylight robbery near SBI Township Branch. The accused, identified as Rajesh Anthony alias David, is a local scout residing in Madhusudhan Marg under Plantsite police station in Sundargarh district.
The incident took place when 60-year-old Sushil Majhi withdrew ₹5 lakh from the SBI Township Branch in Sector-19. Soon after exiting the bank, miscreants on a Pulsar bike robbed him of his cash, ATM card, Aadhaar card, cheque book, and bank documents.
Investigations revealed the crime was executed by an interstate gang from Katihar, Bihar. The gang had been targeting bank customers across Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. Their strategy involved a gang member inside the bank identifying high-value withdrawals and signaling bike-borne accomplices outside.
A special police team was formed, analyzing over 45 CCTV cameras and conducting tower dump analyses. More than 30 similar offences were verified in Jharkhand and West Bengal, confirming the gang’s involvement. Acting on this intelligence, police arrested Rajesh Anthony and recovered the stolen ₹5 lakh.
The investigation is ongoing to track down the gang’s masterminds hiding in various states.
