Wild elephant found dead in Dhenkanal; injuries from fight suspected

Bhubaneswar, March 3: A wild elephant was found dead near Jamujhara village in the Kamakhyanagar forest range of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district on Monday morning. Officials suspect that the 30-year-old male tusker succumbed to injuries sustained during a fight with another elephant.
According to forest officials, the tusker had migrated from the Joranda area about five days ago. A local herd of around 14 elephants had been spotted in the vicinity recently, raising concerns about possible territorial conflicts. Upon receiving information from villagers, Forest Department officials reached the spot and recovered the carcass.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the elephant was involved in a fierce battle for dominance or mating rights, a common occurrence among male tuskers. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, forest officials have increased patrolling in the area to monitor elephant movement and prevent further clashes. The department is also sensitizing locals to avoid conflicts with the migrating herd and ensure their safety.
