One-month-old baby branded with hot metal in Odisha; hospitalized in critical condition

Bhubaneswar, March 3: In a shocking case of superstition, a one-month-old baby boy was branded with hot metal in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district, leading to severe health complications. The incident took place in Phundelpara village under Chandahandi block. The infant, Bhavyansu Nayak, was rushed to Umerkote Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
According to reports, the baby, son of Saroj Kumar Nayak, developed a fever ten days ago and showed signs of shivering while crying persistently. Instead of seeking medical help, the family resorted to the harmful practice of branding, believing it would cure the illness. The child was burned more than 30 times on his stomach. As his condition worsened, the family finally took him to the hospital but refused to disclose who performed the branding.
Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr. Santosh Kumar Panda visited the hospital and confirmed that the baby’s condition had stabilized. He stressed the urgent need for awareness campaigns to eradicate such dangerous practices and encourage timely medical intervention.
