Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Puri, no damage reported

Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal, near Puri in Odisha, at 6:10 am on Tuesday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor was recorded at latitude 19.52°N and longitude 88.55°E, with a depth of 91 km.
Mild tremors were felt in several parts of Odisha, particularly in coastal regions, including Paradip, Puri, Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, Baripada, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, and Balasore. Residents in these areas experienced brief shaking, causing minor panic, but no immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged.
An official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the epicentre was approximately 286 km east of Puri and 297 km east-southeast of Bhubaneswar. Given its location in the Bay of Bengal, the earthquake’s impact on land was relatively mild.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents have been advised to remain cautious. However, experts have ruled out any immediate threat of aftershocks or tsunamis.
