Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: A 22-year-old woman, identified as Situ Pradhan, was allegedly murdered by her husband's family over dowry demands at Samantarapur under Tangi police limits in Cuttack. The tragic incident occurred at her in-laws’ residence on Thursday night.

Situ was married to Rajendra Swain, son of Mulia Swain, in December 2023. However, her in-laws allegedly began pressuring her for additional dowry soon after the wedding. According to her family, despite already giving Rs 5 lakh as dowry, they were unable to meet further demands, leading to increased physical and mental harassment.

On the night of her death, Situ spoke to her family over the phone, but shortly afterward, they received the shocking news of her demise. Suspecting foul play, her family lodged a police complaint accusing her husband’s relatives of murdering her over unmet dowry demands.

Following the complaint, Tangi police detained Rajendra Swain for interrogation. Situ’s body has been sent for post-mortem at SCB Medical College and Hospital, and authorities have assured further action based on the autopsy report. The investigation is currently underway.
