Drunk driver hits cyclist in Balasore, flees with victim’s severed hand

Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: In a shocking and bizarre incident, a drunk driver fatally struck a cyclist and fled the scene, carrying the severed hand of the victim. The accident occurred late Thursday night near Gurdaspur bridge under Raibania police station in Balasore district.
The victim, identified as Purnachandra Mallick, a resident of Gurdaspur, was critically injured when the reckless driver lost control of his vehicle and hit him. The impact of the crash was so severe that it severed Purnachandra’s hand. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital before being shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment. His condition remains critical.
In a bizarre twist, after the accident, the driver, Sania Mallick, picked up the severed hand and sped away. However, locals noticed blood dripping from his vehicle and intercepted him near Purunapani, around 20 km from the accident site.
The police were alerted, and upon arrival, they detained the driver for questioning. Authorities are now investigating the case, while legal action is being initiated against the accused.
