Six-year-old girl trampled to death by elephant in Dhenkanal district

Bhubaneswar, Jan 30: A tragic incident occurred late Wednesday night in the Handifuta area under Motunga police limits in Dhenkanal district, where a six-year-old girl, Pihu, was trampled to death by a wild elephant while she was sleeping.
Pihu, the daughter of Nanda Naik from Handifuta village, had been resting in her home when the rough tusker entered and attacked her. Despite the unfortunate incident, two other family members managed to escape unharmed.
The villagers were devastated by the tragedy, and in their grief, they blocked the Hindol-Gudiakateni Road, which caused a major disruption to vehicular movement. As news of the incident spread, Motunga police and officials from the Forest Department arrived at the site. They spoke with the protestors, calming them down and persuading them to lift the blockade.
This incident highlights the increasing conflict between humans and elephants in the region, as wild animals continue to venture into populated areas in search of food and shelter. Authorities are likely to intensify efforts to mitigate such conflicts moving forward.
