Lioness Rewa dies in Nandankanan after complications during childbirth

Bhubaneswar, Jan 27: Another lion has died at the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, adding to a series of losses in the park. On Monday, lioness Rewa, aged 8, passed away due to complications during childbirth.
This follows the death of male lion Krish, born at the park in 2004, who passed away on August 14 last year.
Rewa was brought to Nandankanan from Kamala Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya in Indore on December 20, 2020. Since then, she had significantly contributed to the park’s lion population, giving birth to eight cubs across three litters. Unfortunately, her latest delivery on January 25, 2025, was fraught with complications. The first cub was stillborn, and veterinary intervention was required for two additional cubs. Despite treatment, Rewa succumbed on January 26, a day after giving birth to the stillborn cub.
With Rewa’s passing, the park now houses 23 lions, comprising 15 Asiatic lions and 8 hybrid lions. Her legacy continues through her surviving six cubs.
