14-year-old killed, mother injured in elephant attack in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: In a tragic case of man-animal conflict, a wild elephant killed a 14-year-old boy and critically injured his mother at Mahatpalli village under Nandapur Panchayat in Odisha's Khurda district on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Satya Martha, while his mother, Sulochana Martha, is undergoing treatment at the Khurda District Headquarters Hospital.
The incident occurred early in the morning when Sulochana stepped out of her house to attend nature's call and was attacked by the elephant. Hearing her screams, Satya rushed to help but was fatally struck by the elephant.
Villagers immediately rescued the mother and son, rushing them to the hospital, where doctors declared Satya dead. Sulochana is being treated for severe injuries.
Forest Department officials have reached the village to investigate the incident and assess the presence of wild elephants in the area. This incident highlights the urgent need for strategies to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
