Youth injured by banned Chinese ‘manja’ in Cuttack

Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: A youth, Aniket Das, sustained injuries on Monday near Trisulia in Cuttack district after being caught in the banned Chinese ‘manja’—a kite string coated with powdered glass. The sharp string became entangled around his neck and finger, causing significant injuries.
The incident highlights the ongoing misuse of Chinese ‘manja’ during Makar Sankranti celebrations, despite its prohibition. The Orissa High Court has previously issued directives to restrict the sale and use of this hazardous material, yet its presence persists, posing serious risks to public safety.
In recent days, similar incidents have been reported. On January 9, a person was injured by the same string in the 42 Mouza area of Cuttack. Another bike rider was hurt on January 10 near Pala Mandap. Last year, two bikers suffered injuries during Makar Sankranti due to the dangerous string.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to raise awareness and enforce the ban, urging people to use safer alternatives for kite flying.
