Kendrapara farmer dies by suicide after crop loss due to unseasonal rain

Bhubaneswar, Jan 4: In a tragic incident, a farmer allegedly died by suicide on Saturday after consuming pesticide, reportedly due to crop loss caused by unseasonal rains in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.
The deceased, identified as 48-year-old Kailash Chandra Dhal, was a resident of Koldhaia village under Aul police limits. According to reports, Kailash had taken a loan of around ₹1.5 lakh to cultivate paddy on his 8-acre farmland. However, unseasonal rains devastated his crops, leaving him unable to repay the loan.
Family members revealed that Kailash had been severely distressed over the loss, refusing food and water for several days. Unable to cope with the mounting pressure, he consumed pesticide. Though his family rushed him to the hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.
This marks the third such suicide in Kendrapara district recently, highlighting the plight of farmers grappling with weather uncertainties and financial burdens. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident while the grieving family appeals for support.
