Ganjam farmer allegedly dies by suicide amid crop loss and debt

Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: A tragic incident unfolded in Barang village under Bada Madhapur Gram Panchayat in Ganjam district, where a 64-year-old farmer allegedly ended his life on Thursday. The deceased, identified as Banamali Penthei, reportedly took the extreme step due to crop loss caused by untimely rains and an overwhelming debt burden.
According to sources, Banamali returned home from his field on Thursday morning. Later, he went to the bathroom in his house, where he allegedly hung himself with a rope. His family revealed that the loss of their 5-acre paddy crop, which was completely destroyed by the recent unseasonal rains, and a debt burden exceeding ₹2 lakh pushed him to despair.
Local police, acting on a tip-off, reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been initiated. This tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges faced by farmers battling unpredictable weather and financial distress.
