Coast Guard intercepts two Bangladeshi vessels in Indian waters

Bhubaneswar, Dec 10: In a strategic operation to enhance maritime security and protect national sovereignty, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) apprehended two Bangladeshi fishing vessels operating illegally within Indian waters near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). The operation, conducted as part of routine surveillance, was spearheaded by the Indian Coast Guard Ship Amogh, which detected suspicious activity around 7:00 AM on Monday.
The vessels, FV Laila-2 and FV Meghna-5, were found engaged in unauthorized fishing, violating international maritime laws and bilateral agreements. Combined, the vessels carried 78 crew members—41 aboard Laila-2 and 37 aboard Meghna-5. During inspection, authorities uncovered approximately 160 tonnes of fish, highlighting the scale of the illegal activity.
The vessels were booked under the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1981, and escorted to Paradip for further investigation. The ICG is working with the Ministry of External Affairs and fisheries departments to ensure legal action. This operation underscores the ICG’s commitment to protecting India’s maritime boundaries and ensuring the safety of its waters.
