Dentist duped by fake broker in Bhubaneswar housing scam

Bhubaneswar, Dec 7: A dentist in Bhubaneswar has allegedly fallen victim to a fraudster posing as a real estate broker, losing a significant sum of money in the process.
Jyoti Prakash Sahu, a dentist from Jagatsinghpur, had come to Bhubaneswar for his internship at a hospital. While searching for accommodation, he spotted a "to-let" poster with a mobile number and contacted the listed broker. The broker, posing as a real estate agent, arranged a meeting and took Sahu to view a house. Impressed by the property, Sahu paid two months' advance rent to the broker.
However, when Sahu returned the next day with his belongings, the homeowner denied any rental agreement, claiming he neither received an advance payment nor intended to rent out the property for residential purposes, as it was designated for commercial use.
Realizing the deception, Sahu confronted the broker, who falsely claimed the advance was a service charge for showing the house. Sahu has since lodged a complaint at the Infocity police station. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter.
