Odisha loses Rs 125 crore to cyber crime in three years, CM informs Assembly

Bhubaneswar, Dec 2: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed in the Odisha Assembly on Monday that cybercriminals defrauded people in the state of a staggering Rs 125.63 crore between 2021 and 2023. Replying to a question raised by BJD MLA Prasanta Behera, the Chief Minister shared that only Rs 2.52 crore of the stolen amount could be recovered.
Providing a breakdown, Majhi said that 6,368 cybercrime cases were registered during the three years, leading to the arrest of 1,388 individuals. The year-wise data shows 2,037 cases and 425 arrests in 2021, 1,983 cases and 441 arrests in 2022, and 2,348 cases with 522 arrests in 2023.
Cybercriminals swindled Rs 40.39 crore in 2021, Rs 37.28 crore in 2022, and Rs 47.94 crore in 2023. However, police efforts managed to recover Rs 27.56 lakh, Rs 97.30 lakh, and Rs 1.52 crore in the respective years, offering partial relief to victims.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity and raise awareness to curb such crimes.
