Odisha faces potential potato crisis amid supply ban by Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Nov 28: Consumers in Odisha are bracing for a potential potato crisis following West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's directive to halt the supply of potatoes to the state. The move comes amid concerns of a potato shortage in West Bengal due to high demand from other states.
The ban has led to an immediate disruption in potato transportation, with West Bengal police stopping trucks at border checkpoints. On Wednesday, hundreds of trucks carrying potatoes were halted near Belda and Datan on National Highway 60, as they lacked the required permissions to proceed to Odisha. Barricades have also been set up at key border points to enforce the ban.
The West Bengal administration has stated that potato supplies will resume only after the new harvest arrives in January and February. This has further strained the situation in Odisha, where potato prices are already soaring, sparking concerns over a looming shortage and its impact on consumers.
