ANM suspended in connection with Patnagarh baby-selling incident

Bhubaneswar, Nov 22: Mamata Bhoi, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) at the Sunamodi Health Centre in Bolangir, has been suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the Patnagarh baby-selling incident. The action was initiated by the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) based on an investigation report from the district health department.
Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo has directed the Bolangir district administration to conduct a detailed probe into the incident and submit a report. The minister, accompanied by administrative officials, visited Sana Gurujibhata village in the Patnagarh sub-division to meet the infant's family.
The incident occurred in Sana Gurujibhata village, where a newborn was reportedly given away by her mother, Arunabati Nag, due to financial hardship and the family’s inability to support five members. The baby was later traced to a private hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where her health is reported to be critical.
According to reports, Arunabati Nag handed over the infant to a Raipur-based couple, Abha Mittal and Raj Kumar Mittal, on November 2. The investigation into the matter continues, with the district administration under instructions to take appropriate action against those involved.
