VAW suspended for demanding bribe from Dana cyclone-hit farmers
Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: A Village Agriculture Worker (VAW) in Bhatapada Panchayat, under Chandbali block of Bhadrak district, has been suspended after a video allegedly showing her demanding a bribe surfaced on social media.
Bhagabati Kisan, the VAW, was suspended by the Chief District Agriculture Officer after the viral video revealed her allegedly demanding bribes from farmers impacted by the Dana cyclone. She reportedly sought the bribe to facilitate government assistance for the affected farmers.
The suspension order stated, “A disciplinary proceeding is being initiated for accepting an undue advantage to perform a public duty. Under Rule 12(i)(a) of the Orissa Civil Service (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1962, Smt. Bhagabati Kisan is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect.”
The order further directed that during the suspension period, Kisan’s headquarters will be at the Office of the Agriculture District Officer, Dhamnagar, and she is prohibited from leaving without prior permission from the competent authority.
