Dhenkanal train accident claims life of elephant as herd crosses tracks

Bhubaneswar, Nov 2: In a tragic incident on Saturday, an elephant was killed after being struck by a goods train near the Meramundali forest section in the Dhenkanal division. The accident occurred around 2 AM when a freight train collided with a herd of approximately 40 elephants crossing the railway tracks, just three kilometers from the Meramundali railway station.
Upon receiving a tip-off about the accident, officials from the Forest Department and the Government Railway Police (GRP) swiftly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and recover the deceased elephant’s body.
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. The elephant's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death and gather further information regarding the accident. The Forest Department is conducting a thorough inquiry to prevent such incidents in the future, highlighting the need for better safety measures for wildlife near railway tracks.
