Embankment collapse at Jajpur canal site claims life of minor, sparks safety concerns

Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: In a tragic incident in Odisha’s Jajpur district, an 8-year-old girl lost her life, and her father was critically injured after part of the Rengali canal embankment collapsed at Kalinga Nagar on Friday morning.
The victim, identified as Gita Munda from Baunsanali village under Kalinga Nagar police limits, was with her father, Ishwar Munda, when the incident occurred. The father-daughter duo had gone to the canal area early in the morning when a mudslide caused the embankment to cave in, burying them both under the debris.
Rescue operations were launched immediately by Fire Services and police personnel. Gita was retrieved and rushed to the Dangadi Community Health Center (CHC), where she was pronounced dead. Ishwar was taken to the government hospital in Sukinda and remains in critical condition.
At the time of the mishap, construction work was underway by a company named ‘Right Triangle.’ Locals have alleged that substandard construction work at the canal embankment led to the tragic accident.
