Odisha cracks down on non-performing officers: 843 salaries withheld for PMAY failure

Bhubaneswar, Oct 30: The Odisha government has issued a notification to withhold the salaries of 843 officers in Mayurbhanj district due to dereliction of duty concerning the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). These officials failed to complete the construction of houses in rural areas as mandated.
Mayurbhanj District Collector Hema Kanta Say has directed Block Development Officers (BDOs) in all blocks to communicate this decision to the concerned officials. A departmental letter (No. 8459), dated October 28, 2024, specifies that salaries will not be disbursed until these officers meet the targets for the fiscal year 2023-24.
Reports indicate that a total of 1,026 officers were assigned to the PMAY rural housing projects in the district. Upon review, it was revealed that only 173 had fulfilled their responsibilities, while the performance of the remaining 843 was deemed unsatisfactory.
Inspections showed that the lack of field visits and proper monitoring contributed to the incomplete work, with approximately 63% of the PMAY houses still unfinished. The district administration has labeled this situation as "unfortunate."
