Panic buying grips Odisha as cyclone looms, prices of essentials soar

Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: With a low-pressure area intensifying into a cyclone, Odisha is witnessing panic buying, leading to a sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities.
Onion prices surged significantly, jumping by ₹15 per kilogram in a single day. In Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, residents rushed to buy onions, potatoes, sugar, and biscuits in large quantities on Tuesday morning. Onion prices rose from ₹35 per kilogram (₹100 for 3 kg) to ₹40-45 in the morning and touched ₹50 by evening.
In Balasore, the prices of vegetables skyrocketed: brinjal and potatoes are now ₹60 and ₹80 per kg, while cucumbers, lady finger, and onions are ₹80, ₹60, and ₹50 per kg, respectively. Papaya and cabbage are being sold at ₹25 and ₹20 per kg.
Berhampur saw similar trends, with tomatoes priced between ₹70-80 per kg. Brinjal, cauliflower, beans, and onions are priced at ₹70, ₹100, ₹120, and ₹60 per kg.
In Cuttack’s Chhatra Bazaar, the cost of potatoes, lady finger, brinjal, cucumber, onions, and tomatoes rose to ₹80, ₹60, ₹50, ₹60, ₹70, and ₹80 per kg, respectively.
Consumers have expressed concerns over the rising costs, fearing further increases amid supply disruptions caused by the cyclone.
