Forest official killed by elephant during herd control operation in Keonjhar
Bhubaneswar, Oct 17: In a tragic incident, a forest official lost his life after being trampled by an elephant at Jharabeda village under the Sadar Range of Keonjhar district late Wednesday night.
The deceased, identified as Basant Mahant, was a longtime member of the Elephant Squad. On Wednesday night, Basant, along with other forest officials, was conducting an operation to drive away a herd of seven elephants that had been causing damage to crops in the village.
During the operation, a lone tusker became separated from the herd and charged at the team. While others managed to escape, Basant was caught by the elephant and trampled to death on the spot.
Senior forest officials rushed to the scene after the incident, and Basant's body was sent for a post-mortem. His sudden demise has deeply saddened his family, colleagues, and local residents.
Basant’s dedication to wildlife conservation and his years of service as part of the Elephant Squad have been remembered with great respect.
