Congress leader files dowry torture case against husband and in-laws

Bhubaneswar, Oct 16: Aul police have registered a case of dowry-related torture following a complaint filed by Dr. Debasmita Sharma, the Congress nominee for the Aul Assembly constituency, against her husband and in-laws. The case has been registered under Sections 109, 85, 125, and 115 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
In her complaint, Dr. Debasmita alleged that she married Dr. Rahul Pratap Rai on December 14, 2022. However, soon after their marriage, her husband and in-laws began mentally and physically abusing her, demanding a dowry of ₹50 lakh. Dr. Rahul allegedly pressured her to obtain the amount from her father, Devendra Sharma, a former Congress MLA from Aul, to set up a private clinic in the area.
When Dr. Debasmita and her father expressed their inability to provide such a large sum, the abuse escalated. The FIR states that in October 2023, Dr. Rahul even tried to smother her with a pillow in an attempt to kill her.
She further alleged that her husband often forced her to consume alcohol and punished her by burning her with cigarette stubs when she resisted. Unable to endure the escalating torture, she sought police intervention.
Based on her complaint, Aul police have registered cases against six individuals involved in the alleged dowry abuse. Investigations are ongoing.
