Mahanadi water dispute: Union Minister CR Patil promises early settlement
Bhubaneswar, Sept 26: Union Minister for Jal Shakti, CR Patil, on Thursday assured that the long-pending Mahanadi water-sharing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh would soon be resolved.
The Mahanadi River, a vital water source for both states, has been at the heart of a prolonged conflict. Odisha has expressed concerns over Chhattisgarh's construction of industrial barrages, which allegedly reduce water flow to Odisha during the non-monsoon period. Despite multiple attempts, an inter-state agreement has not yet been achieved.
Odisha claims that Chhattisgarh has been constructing dams and weirs upstream on the Mahanadi River without consultation. Addressing the media during an event in Bhubaneswar, Minister Patil said, "We will resolve the dispute soon." He further emphasized that the tribunal is working diligently to ensure a fair and equitable solution for both states.
While participating in the ‘Ek Ped, Maa Ke Naam’ program, Patil also highlighted the importance of tree planting and cleanliness initiatives, in line with Mahatma Gandhi's vision and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat mission. "We have organized over 10 lakh programs in rural areas to promote cleanliness and environmental conservation," he added.
