Modi govt approves ‘One Nation, One Election’ report; bill to be introduced in winter session

New Delhi, Sept 18: On Wednesday, the Narendra Modi government approved the report from the high-level panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind on the proposal for ‘One Nation, One Election’. A bill to facilitate simultaneous elections is expected to be introduced in the upcoming Winter session of Parliament.
The panel's recommendations, which were reviewed by the Union Cabinet, aim to synchronize Parliamentary and Assembly elections to streamline the electoral process. This initiative was part of the Modi government's 100-day agenda.
Prime Minister Modi has frequently emphasized the benefits of holding elections on a single schedule, noting the country's continuous election cycle incurs significant costs. The Kovind-led panel, which submitted its report in March, proposed creating a unified electoral roll and issuing voter ID cards through the Election Commission of India (ECI), in coordination with state election authorities.
The panel argued that simultaneous elections would conserve resources, eliminate disruptions, and support the vision of “India, that is Bharat”.
