Bhitarkanika sees significant rise in nesting bird count this season
Bhubaneswar, Sept 16: There has been a notable rise in the population of nesting birds in Odisha's Bhitarkanika National Park, located in Kendrapara district, during this monsoon season.
According to park officials, a recent census recorded 130,123 birds from ten different species, marking an increase of 6,265 compared to last year's count of 123,867 birds. Forest officials recorded these birds in 27,282 nests spread across 1,300 mangrove trees. The census report was based on the direct count method.
Census teams surveyed water bodies and mangrove areas around Mathadia, Balida, Laxmiprasaddia, and Durgaprasaddia heronries within and around Bhitarkanika.
Sudarshan Gopinath Yadav, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bhitarkanika, stated that the rise in bird numbers is a positive indicator for bird conservation efforts in the state. The park's abundant fish and secluded environment, far from human habitation, provide ideal breeding conditions for these birds. Yadav highlighted the beauty of observing birds as they build and repair nests, incubate eggs, care for fledglings, and protect them from harsh weather conditions.
