Flood threat looms in Mayurbhanj as rivers near danger mark

Bhubaneswar, Sept 16: With water levels in several rivers nearing danger levels, the Mayurbhanj district administration has issued an alert to villagers in Morada and Rasagobindapur blocks along the Budhabalanga river, warning of potential floods in the Jalaka river. Residents have been urged to move to safer locations.
Reports indicate that rivers like Budhabalanga, Subarnarekha, and Jalaka have swelled due to continuous rainfall in recent days. The Jalaka river is flowing above the danger mark, while the Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha rivers are approaching critical levels. Budhabalanga’s water level stands at 3.10 meters, compared to the danger level of 8.13 meters, and Subarnarekha’s level is at 6.62 meters, with a danger mark of 10.36 meters.
In light of the ongoing rainfall, the administration has advised people in Morada and Rasagobindapur to evacuate weak structures and low-lying areas. Residents in Baripada have also been alerted as the Budhabalanga river continues to rise.
Tragically, two deaths have been reported due to the collapse of rain-soaked mud walls in the district. The victims were identified as Pangala Pingua from Badabil village in Rairangpur block and Jhunu Bindhani from Masigaon in Gopabandhu block.
