IMD issues red alert for rain and thunderstorms in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 29: A red warning for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for three districts in Odisha for Friday, as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the red warning for Gajapati, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts, while an orange alert has been announced for four other districts – Ganjam, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.
A red alert signifies the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, whereas an orange warning indicates isolated heavy rainfalls.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area developed over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal on Thursday morning due to a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas. This low-pressure area is expected to move west-northwestwards and become more pronounced over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Friday.
It is further predicted to intensify into a depression over the same region within the next two days and move towards the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts.
