Hirakud Dam closes four gates to regulate water levels

Bhubaneswar, Aug 10: In a recent development, Hirakud Dam authorities closed four gates on Saturday to regulate the water level. Currently, floodwater is being discharged through ten gates of the reservoir.
The closure of these four sluice gates is a precautionary measure to prevent any potential damage to life and property. As of Sunday evening, a total of twenty gates were opened to release floodwater, according to sources.
The present water level at Hirakud Dam stands at 612 feet, while the inflow at Mundali in Cuttack is at 3 lakh cusecs. The situation remains normal across all river systems in Odisha, stated the Engineer-in-Chief of the Water Resources Department.
Earlier, the release of floodwater from Hirakud Dam had caused a rise in the Mahanadi River's water level, raising concerns among residents of downstream areas.
It is noteworthy that the first gate of Hirakud Dam was opened on August 4.
