Bhubaneswar police ramp up anti-drug measures, dozens arrested
Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: The Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police has launched strict measures to combat the sale and consumption of various narcotics in the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District. According to a press release issued on Wednesday, local police stations are actively working against the illicit drug trade under 'Operation White Spider,' with specialized teams, POPD and Team-60, monitoring these activities.
In July 2024 alone, five cases involving the sale of brown sugar were registered, resulting in the arrest of 11 drug peddlers. Authorities seized 55.990 grams of brown sugar, Rs 2,84,100 in cash, seven mobile phones, and six two-wheelers from the suspects.
Additionally, three cases of illegal ganja sales were recorded, leading to the arrest of eight individuals. Police confiscated 41.7 kg of marijuana, Rs 920 in cash, three mobile phones, and one four-wheeler from those apprehended.
'Operation White Spider,' initiated in August 2021, has led to significant progress. From January to July of this year, 65 drug peddlers were arrested in 35 brown sugar-related cases, with 543.29 grams of the drug, Rs 6,65,625 in cash, 24 mobile phones, 26 two-wheelers, and three four-wheelers seized. In the same period, 38 ganja-related cases were registered, resulting in the arrest of 66 individuals and the confiscation of five quintals of marijuana, Rs 1,58,760 in cash, 19 mobile phones, six two-wheelers, one three-wheeler, and seven four-wheelers.
The Bhubaneswar City Police have also issued a WhatsApp number (7077798111) for the public to report illegal drug activities and other criminal activities in their areas.
