Bhitarkanika National Park reopens after breeding season closure

Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: The renowned Bhitarkanika National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Kendrapara district reopens today, Thursday, after being closed for three months. The temporary closure was implemented to ensure the uninterrupted breeding and nesting activities of estuarine crocodiles.
With the park's reopening, visitors will find a new Canopy bridge being constructed. This Skywalk will be 600 meters long and 15 feet high, built entirely of wood. A selfie point has also been installed midway on the Canopy bridge for visitors.
This year, 114 crocodile nests have been identified, compared to 122 nests recorded last year. The park had been closed since May 1 to protect tourists from potential aggression by the crocodiles during their breeding season.
Earlier this year, the park was also closed for nine days, from January 5 to January 13, to conduct the annual census of estuarine crocodiles and migratory birds. The crocodile counting took place from January 10 to January 12.
