Polavaram project sparks turmoil in Odisha Assembly

Bhubaneswar, July 25: The fourth day of the Odisha Assembly session saw unprecedented chaos as opposition members from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress disrupted proceedings. Consequently, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the House until 4 pm.
On Thursday, the Odisha Assembly became a scene of commotion during the zero hour, with opposition members raising a ruckus over the contentious Polavaram project.
Congress MLA Rama Chandra Kadam voiced his displeasure with the central government's decision to fund Andhra Pradesh for the Polavaram project, alleging it would cause flooding in several areas of southern Odisha.
In response, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati demanded the formation of a House Committee to address the Polavaram issue. The Congress members created an uproar, insisting that the Speaker act on their demand.
During the turmoil, MLA Tara Bahinipati allegedly pulled the Speaker’s microphone, prompting a brief adjournment. Speaker Surama Padhy initially adjourned the House for 15 minutes before extending the adjournment to 4 pm.
