Two teachers suspended after students fall ill from expired iron tablets

Bhubaneswar, July 24: Following an incident where 30 students from Paradip’s Lock Pada Primary School reportedly fell ill after consuming expired iron tablets, the Block Education Officer (BEO) has suspended two teachers for negligence.
The BEO has suspended headmistress Manjulata Samal and assistant teacher Dipti Swain, and has also issued show-cause notices to two other assistant teachers for their roles in the incident.
In response, the Health Department has confiscated over a hundred strips of expired medication from the school.
Sources reveal that the expired tablets, manufactured by Ciano Pharma Private Limited in Madhya Pradesh, were produced in December 2019 and had expired by December 2021. These tablets were allegedly administered to students in 2024, three years after their expiry. Shortly after taking the tablets, several students experienced stomach aches, nausea, and vomiting. They were immediately taken to Biju Memorial Hospital in Atharabanki, Paradip for treatment.
