Odisha sees surge in cyber fraud cases, Rs 36 crore lost in 6 months

Bhubaneswar, July 11: Odisha has seen a sharp rise in cyber fraud cases, with 2,394 incidents reported across the state in the first half of 2024, totaling approximately Rs 36 crore in losses, according to reports.
Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda revealed that these cases were registered in various police stations during the six-month period from January to June 2024. Authorities have managed to freeze Rs 9.5 crore and have returned Rs 46 lakh to victims, while efforts continue to recover funds for others affected.
Commissioner Panda highlighted that most cyber frauds involved UPI fraud, social media scams, fraudulent parcel and credit card deliveries, and fraudulent messages related to SIM KYC procedures.
So far, the Commissionerate Police have arrested 21 cyber fraudsters, including 5 involved in interstate cyber crime operations, all of whom have been presented before the court for legal proceedings.
