Kuwait apartment fire kills 49, including two Odias

Bhubaneswar, June 14: A devastating fire in an apartment building in Kuwait claimed the lives of 49 people, 45 of whom have been identified as Indian nationals working in the Gulf State. Among the deceased are two individuals from Odisha.

One of the victims, 30-year-old Mohammad Zahur from the Tigiria area in Cuttack district, died of asphyxiation in the major fire. Zahur, the son of Samsur Mohammad, was employed as a civil laboratory technician at a trading company and lived on the building's 5th floor.

According to sources, Zahur woke up at 5 a.m. on the tragic day to offer prayers. Upon realizing there was a fire, he began waking up his roommates, helping some of his friends escape. However, he succumbed to the smoke as the fire spread rapidly. The fire brigade rescued him in critical condition and rushed him to a hospital, where he later died during treatment.

A relative identified Zahur's body, which was subsequently sent back to India. His death has deeply shocked his family. Zahur was married, and his wife is seven months pregnant.
