Depression likely over central Bay of Bengal by May 24, says IMD

Bhubaneswar, May 22: A low-pressure area has formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, prompting the Meteorological Centre to predict its likely intensification into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal on May 24.
“It is very likely to move northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. It would continue to move northeastwards and intensify further thereafter,” stated the release from the regional office of the IMD.
According to the latest IMD report, squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, is expected over the southern Bay of Bengal on May 22. Wind speeds are anticipated to increase, reaching 60 kmph to 70 kmph over the central and adjacent southern Bay of Bengal on May 23 and 24.
This system will cause sea conditions to be moderate to rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 22, and rough to very rough over the central and adjoining southern Bay of Bengal starting May 23. The Met Office has warned that the low pressure could lead to heavy rainfall in some areas on May 25.
In response to the alert, the Odisha government has instructed district collectors to be prepared for any emergencies. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea.
Meanwhile, Odisha continues to suffer from severe heatwave conditions. However, norwesters are expected to bring rainfall and thunderstorms to coastal and northern Odisha under the influence of Kalabaisakhi.
